ENCAUSTIC WAX WORKSHOPS
3 hour taster session making a sample board, one to one, £100
Encaustic wax is a fascinating medium, creating depth and luminosity using layers of coloured wax fused together. This will open up a whole new avenue of creativity, you may have never come across before, or have always wondered about, but have been unsure how to begin.
It can be quite daunting due to the nature of fusing layers together using heat, this can be done several different ways via an iron, heat gun or blow torch. The fusing is required because the wax layers could shear off when cool, obviously destroying your work.
With my workshops, you will be given the opportunity to play and explore the medium using both a blow torch or a heat gun dependant on your preference; an iron is used for different techniques including fusing.
I generally use a blow torch, because it heats up the wax faster than a heat gun, however, using this without prior knowledge can be quite scary. My session will give you the confidence to develop you blow torch /heat gun skills, as well as learning new techniques and abilities.

- Health and Safety protocols.
- All materials.
- How to make your own wax medium.
- Preparing a board ready for colours and textures.
- Use of a blow torch and/or heat gun.
- Understanding of textural techniques including Sgraffito (scratching in) and Accretion (creating texture).
- The use of shellac on wax.
- Finishing edges.
- How to look after a piece of work once completed.
